The second competition day at the World Gliding Championship turned out to be very difficult after all, as an unexpectedly thick layer of smoke from Canadian wildfires spread across the task area. Despite thoughtful planning, the conditions deteriorated rapidly and caught everyone off guard. In the end, not a single pilot managed to return to the airfield without using their engine or being retrieved by car.

Remarkably, Norbert Scarlat (ROM) in the Standard Class was the only pilot to complete the entire task—landing just short of home in the finish ring. A truly impressive effort in extremely marginal conditions. Congratulations to him!

Many others were less fortunate, with fields across the region dotted with gliders. Some landed together in large groups—one field hosted 19 gliders, turning the outlanding into a social gathering while their crews were on the way to retrieve them. Others faced more unusual situations, including two pilots who landed on a military airfield and had to be checked by military police. Thankfully, no serious issues occurred, and all returned safely.

We’re especially grateful that no major damage happened during the outlandings, and pilots are still smiling. To lift spirits, the task setter, competition director, and meteorologist treated everyone to free beers this evening—an apology gesture after the long and unexpected adventures in the Czech countryside.

Druhý polní den

Druhý soutěžní den na mistrovství světa v plachtění se nakonec ukázal jako velmi obtížný, protože se v prostoru úlohy rozšířila nečekaně silná vrstva kouře z kanadských požárů. Navzdory promyšlenému plánování se podmínky rychle zhoršily a zastihly všechny nepřipravené. Nakonec se ani jednomu pilotovi nepodařilo vrátit se na letiště, aniž by použil motor nebo byl vyzvednut pomocníkem z pole.

Norbert Scarlat (ROM) ve třídě Standard byl jediným pilotem, který dokončil celou úlohu – přistál jen kousek od domova v cílovém kruhu. Skutečně působivý výkon v extrémně komplikovaných podmínkách. Gratulujeme mu!

Mnozí další měli méně štěstí, pole po celém okolí Tábora byla poseta kluzáky. Někteří přistávali společně ve velkých skupinách – na jednom poli přistálo 19 kluzáků a přistání se proměnilo v přátelskou sešlost, zatímco jejich pomocníci byly na cestě za nimi. Jiní se potýkali s neobvyklejšími situacemi, včetně dvou pilotů, kteří přistáli na vojenském letišti a museli být zkontrolováni vojenskou policií. Naštěstí nedošlo k žádným vážným problémům a všichni se v pořádku vrátili.

Jsme obzvláště vděční, že během přistání nedošlo k žádným větším škodám a piloti se stále usmívají. Pro zlepšení nálady task setter, ředitel soutěže a meteorolog dnes večer všechny pohostili pivem zdarma – jako omluvné gesto po dlouhých a nečekaných dobrodružstvích v české krajině.

The first competition day of the World Gliding Championship saw all three classes take on ambitious racing tasks of around 470 km, heading west towards the Czech-German border. From there, the Standard and 15m Classes turned south of Tábor to head home, while the Club Class returned via a northern turnpoint.

What was expected to be a strong soaring day was unexpectedly complicated by a haze of smoke drifting in from Canadian wildfires. The smoke, which reduced visibility and weakened thermal conditions across the task area, created significant challenges for pilots. Unfortunately, as a result, the pilots flew slower than expected and some were forced to land out.

Despite the tricky weather, a large portion of the field completed the tasks, showing determination and skill under difficult circumstances.

It was an interesting and dramatic start to the championship, setting the tone for a competitive and unpredictable week ahead.

První soutěžní den

První soutěžní den mistrovství světa v plachtění se všechny tři třídy vydaly na ambiciózní trať přibližně 470 km dlouhou směrem na západ k česko-německým hranicím. Odtud se třídy Standard a 15m vracely jižně od Tábora, zatímco klubová třída se vracela přes severní otočný bod.

To, co měl být silný letecký den, nečekaně zkomplikoval opar kouře, který se sem snášel z kanadských požárů. Kouř, který snížil viditelnost a zhoršil termické podmínky v celé oblasti úlohy, způsobil pilotům značné problémy. Bohužel v důsledku toho piloti letěli pomaleji, než se očekávalo, a někteří byli nuceni přistát do polí.

Navzdory záludnému počasí velká část závodníků úlohu splnila.

Byl to zajímavý a dramatický začátek závodů, který zahájil i nadcházející soutěžní a nepředvídatelný týden.

Tuto zprávu ráno obdrželi všichni závodníci, a tak doufáme, že využijí dnešní oblačný den dobře a připraví se tak na zítřejší nadějnou trať.

Today’s Opening Ceremony marked the official start of the World Gliding Championship, held at 4 PM in the historic Žižka Square in Tábor. Despite the steady rain, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and pride as all participating pilots were introduced in a festive parade through the square.

Teams marched with their national flags, smiling and waving to the crowd, embodying the international spirit of the event. A series of welcoming speeches followed, delivered by local officials, organizers, and gliding representatives, all expressing gratitude and enthusiasm for hosting the championship in Tabor.

After the formal part of the ceremony, participants had the chance to explore Tábor’s charming old town and the team captains were invited to a reception at the historic city hall of Tabor.

Though the weather didn’t cooperate, it was heartwarming to see so many happy and joyful faces. The rain did little to dampen the spirits of this passionate gliding community. As the evening winds down, we hope everyone finds time to rest and gather energy—the first competition day is just around the corner, and the real adventure is about to begin!

Zahajovací ceremoniál

Dnešním zahajovacím ceremoniálem, který se konal v 16 hodin na historickém Žižkově náměstí v Táboře, bylo oficiálně zahájeno Mistrovství Světa v plachtění. Navzdory vytrvalému dešti byla atmosféra plná vzrušení a hrdosti, když se všichni zúčastnění piloti představili ve slavnostním průvodu po náměstí.

Týmy pochodovaly se svými národními vlajkami, usmívaly se a mávaly davu a ztělesňovaly tak mezinárodního ducha akce. Následovala řada uvítacích projevů, které pronesli místní úředníci, organizátoři a zástupci plachtařů, kteří vyjádřili vděčnost a nadšení z pořádání mistrovství v Táboře.

Po skončení formální části ceremoniálu měli účastníci možnost prohlédnout si půvabné staré město Tábora a kapitáni týmů byli pozváni na recepci na historické táborské radnici.

Přestože počasí nepřálo, bylo krásné vidět tolik šťastných a radostných tváří. Déšť jen málo zkalil náladu naší veselé plachtařské komunity. Doufáme, že s končícím večerem si všichni najdou čas na odpočinek a načerpání energie – první soutěžní den je za rohem a skutečné dobrodružství brzy začne!

The third and final official training day at the World Gliding Championship began under grey skies, with light rain and a thick blanket of cloud dampening early hopes for flying. However, as the day progressed, the weather steadily improved, lifting spirits across the airfield. By early afternoon, conditions were flyable, and the launch lines quickly filled with eager pilots and crews.

In total, more than 90 gliders took to the skies, taking advantage of the improving weather to attempt the 2-hour Assigned Area Task (AAT) set for the day. With varied conditions across the task area, pilots had a final chance to fine-tune their strategies, test glider performance, and get a feel for the local air before the real competition begins.

Today marked not just the end of training flights, but also a shift in focus. With the Opening Ceremony scheduled for tomorrow and the first competition day on Sunday, teams are wrapping up technical preparations and turning their attention toward the contest ahead.

Now, as the last gliders land, the teams’ attention turns to the upcoming mandatory safety briefing. This important session will ensure all pilots and crews are fully briefed on local procedures and ready to compete safely and fairly.

Following the briefing, we look forward to officially welcoming everyone with the championship’s welcome party—complete with free beer, light snacks, and the chance to meet fellow pilots, crews, and organizers in a relaxed setting. It’s a perfect moment to celebrate the international spirit of gliding and build camaraderie before competition begins. We’re excited to see new friendships form and old ones rekindled as we prepare for an unforgettable weeks of soaring.

Třetí oficiální tréninkový den

Třetí a poslední oficiální tréninkový den na mistrovství světa v plachtění začal pod šedivou oblohou, lehký déšť a hustá oblačnost zmařily počáteční naděje na létání. V průběhu dne se však počasí postupně zlepšovalo a zlepšovalo náladu na celém letišti. Brzy odpoledne už byly podmínky pro létání příznivé a startovní čáry se rychle zaplnily dychtivými piloty a posádkami.

Celkem se na oblohu vzneslo více než 90 kluzáků, které využily zlepšujícího se počasí k tomu, aby se pokusily splnit dvouhodinový úkol AAT (Assigned Area Task) stanovený pro tento den. Díky různorodým podmínkám v celé oblasti úlohy měli piloti poslední příležitost doladit své strategie, otestovat techniku a poznat místní ovzduší před začátkem skutečné soutěže.

Dnešek neznamenal jen konec tréninkových letů, ale také změnu zaměření pozornosti. Vzhledem k tomu, že zahajovací ceremoniál je naplánován na zítřek a první soutěžní den na neděli, týmy dokončují technické přípravy a zaměřují svou pozornost na nadcházející soutěž.

Nyní, když přistávají poslední kluzáky, se pozornost týmů obrací k nadcházející povinnému safety briefingu. Tento důležitý briefing zajistí, že všichni piloti a posádky budou plně seznámeni s místními postupy a připraveni bezpečně a férově soutěžit.

Po briefingu se těšíme na oficiální přivítání všech účastníků mistrovství na uvítací párty – s pivem zdarma, lehkým občerstvením a možností setkat se v uvolněném prostředí s ostatními piloty, posádkami a organizátory. Je to ideální okamžik pro oslavu mezinárodního ducha plachtění a budování kamarádství před zahájením soutěže. Těšíme se, až se při přípravě na nezapomenutelné týdny létání vytvoří nová přátelství a obnoví ta stará.

The second official training day unfolded under a blanket of high and medium level cloud cover, which unfortunately prevented a task from being set. Despite the subdued conditions, the atmosphere at the airfield remained focused and productive, as pilots and crews used the day to continue preparing for the week of racing ahead.

On our briefing today, we rewarded Darius Gudziunas (LTU) for being the only pilot completing yesterday’s 2H AAT task. We also welcomed our meteorologist Jan Horák and everyone enjoyed his forever entertaining meteorology part of the briefing.

Although no official task was declared, four pilots chose to launch, using the opportunity to test their instruments, flight computers, and gliders. On the ground, the rest of the field made the most of the downtime. Hangar remained busy with ongoing scrutineering. The competition office was buzzing with registrations and staff preparations. And all the national teams continued on expanding the camp and making themselves feel more like at home here in Tábor.

Luckily, there was no severe damage done by the thunderstorms passing at night, and so most of the pilots rigged their gliders today and the tie down area is full of gliders again. We hope that now that we have endured all the rain and clouds, we will be rewarded with sun and cumulus during the competition itself.

Druhý oficiální tréninkový den

Druhý den oficiálního výcviku se odehrával pod příkrovem vysoké a střední oblačnosti, která bohužel znemožnila zadání trati. Navzdory utlumeným podmínkám zůstala atmosféra na letišti soustředěná a produktivní, protože piloti a posádky využili tento den k další přípravě na nadcházející závodní týden.

Na dnešním briefingu jsme odměnili Daria Gudziunase (LTU) za to, že jako jediný pilot splnil včerejší trať 2h AAT. Přivítali jsme také našeho meteorologa Jana Horáka a všichni si užili jeho zábavnou meteorologickou část briefingu.

Přestože nebyla vyhlášena žádná oficiální úloha, čtyři piloti se rozhodli odstartovat a využili tak možnosti vyzkoušet své přístroje a kluzáky. Hangár zůstal zaneprázdněn probíhajícími technickými přejímkami. V soutěžní kanceláři to hučelo přihláškami a přípravami organizačního týmu. A všechny národní týmy pokračovaly v rozšiřování kempu a v zabydlování se tady na letišti v Táboře.

Naštěstí nedošlo k žádným vážným škodám způsobeným bouřkami včerejší noci, a tak většina pilotů dnes poskládala svá letadla zpět dohromady a kotvící plocha je opět plná kluzáků. Doufáme, že když už jsme přetrpěli všechen déšť a oblačnost, budeme během samotné soutěže odměněni sluncem a kumuly.

The World Gliding Championship launched into proper action today with the first official training day. The scrutineering and registration processes ran seamlessly, with teams and pilots efficiently getting through checks and formalities. The organizing team’s good preparation ensured a calm and orderly start to the competition with our first big briefing and training tasks too.

By noon, the grid was ready with 85 gliders prepared for take-off. Thanks to our experienced tow pilots, all aircraft were airborne within 1.5 hours with no significant complications.

The weather was very interesting for our pilots today. It began with a handful of scattered cumulus clouds below a partial high level cloud cover offering at least some thermal activity. While some competitors faced the tricky conditions of weakening thermals, a fortunate few managed to climb into wave lift triggered by strong upper-level winds. However, all pilots had to be careful about arriving soon and making sure to clean up and cover the gliders before the forecasted thunderstorms arrive.

As the first training day wraps up, the mood around the airfield is optimistic, excited, and friendly. Pilots are debriefing, fine-tuning their gliders, and preparing for the days ahead, while the organising team is busy with intense preparations.

První oficiální tréninkový den

Mistrovství světa v plachtění dnes odstartovalo prvním oficiálním tréninkovým dnem. Kontrolní a registrační procesy proběhly hladce, týmy a piloti efektivně prošli kontrolami a formalitami. Dobrá příprava organizačního týmu zajistila klidný a spořádaný začátek soutěže i s našimi prvními velkými briefingy a tréninkovými úkoly.

V poledne byl startovní rošt připraven s 85 kluzáky připravenými ke startu. Díky našim zkušeným vlekařům se všechna letadla dostala do vzduchu během 1,5 hodiny bez výraznějších komplikací.

Počasí bylo dnes pro naše piloty velmi zajímavé. Začalo hrstkou rozptýlené kupovité oblačnosti pod částečnou výškovou oblačností, která nabízela alespoň nějakou termickou aktivitu. Zatímco někteří soutěžící se potýkali se záludnými podmínkami slábnoucí termiky, několika šťastlivcům se podařilo vystoupat do vlnového vztlaku vyvolaného silným větrem ve vyšších hladinách. Všichni piloti si však museli dát pozor na brzký přílet a ujistit se, že kluzáky uklidili a zakryli před příchodem předpovídaných bouřek.

Když první výcvikový den končí, nálada kolem letiště je optimistická, vzrušená a přátelská. Piloti podávají hlášení, dolaďují své kluzáky a připravují se na další dny, zatímco organizační tým se intenzivně věnuje přípravám.
